Understand
The same sounding pitch sits in a completely different visual position depending on which clef reads it, which is exactly why clefs exist: each one keeps a different comfortable pitch range centered on the staff's five lines. This tool describes position only; it never implies a pitch is easy or hard to play on any particular instrument.
Worked example
Middle C (C4) sits one ledger line below the treble staff and one ledger line above the bass staff, the same pitch read in two clefs built around different comfortable ranges. No transposition is applied in this example, so the sounding pitch is identical in both readings.
Method and limitations
Each clef has a fixed bottom-line reference note; position is the continuous diatonic step distance (each line and space counts as one letter step) between your chosen pitch and that reference. Why four clefs instead of just treble and bass
Alto and tenor clef exist specifically because instruments like viola, trombone, and cello spend much of their range awkwardly high above the bass staff or awkwardly low below the treble staff; a C clef centered on their comfortable range avoids constant ledger lines. Reading fluently in more than one clef is a real, separate skill from reading pitch itself, which this tool supports without claiming to teach.
