Understand
"Written" is what appears on a transposing instrument's own sheet music; "concert" (or sounding) is the actual pitch produced. The two only match for a non-transposing instrument. Mixing up the two domains is one of the most common arranging mistakes, which is exactly why this tool always labels both explicitly rather than showing a bare note name.
Worked example
A written C for a B-flat clarinet or trumpet actually sounds B-flat in concert pitch, a major second lower than written. Converting that concert B-flat back to written pitch for the same instrument returns exactly C, confirming the two directions are true inverses.
Method and limitations
Each instrument profile states an explicit written-to-sounding semitone offset; the tool applies that offset (or its inverse) and respells the result using a flat-preferring convention typical of transposing-instrument parts. This launch version covers a small set of common instrument profiles and never assumes an octave placement beyond what a profile explicitly states.
Why transposing instruments exist at all
Transposing instruments trace back to a mix of historical valve/key limitations and practical fingering conventions: writing every part in concert pitch would force players switching between similar instruments (say, B-flat and E-flat clarinets) to relearn fingerings for the same written notation. The convention persists today mainly for that continuity, not because concert pitch itself would be harder to read.
