Understand

Tapping a subdivision of a beat, for example tapping every eighth note instead of every quarter note, yields that subdivision's own tempo, not the underlying quarter-note tempo, unless you deliberately tap the main beat. The stability label describes how consistent your own taps were with each other, not a certified measurement of a song's exact tempo: this tool never claims a "detected song BPM" or an exact confidence percentage.

Worked example

Four taps at 0, 500, 1,000, and 1,500 milliseconds produce three equal 500 ms intervals, and BPM = 60000 / 500 = 120. Because all three intervals are identical, the stability label reads Stable.

Method and limitations

The tool keeps your latest eight valid inter-tap intervals, ignoring a duplicate event inside 80 ms of the previous tap (a bounced double-tap) and resetting the retained run after 3,000 ms of silence. BPM is 60000 / median interval, and stability compares the median absolute deviation of those intervals to the median itself: 5% or below reads Stable, above that reads Variable. A single extreme interval is rejected only when it sits more than 2.5 median absolute deviations from the median and at least 50 ms away, so one mistimed tap does not silently distort the whole estimate. No tap timestamp or resulting BPM value is stored beyond the current page view.
