Understand

Hearing tempo and hearing rhythm are different skills: tempo is how fast the underlying beat moves, while rhythm is how a phrase divides that beat into a specific pattern of long and short events. This tool holds tempo fixed and generates variety only in the duration pattern itself, so what you are practicing is genuinely isolated to rhythm recognition.

Worked examples

A generated pattern always sums to exactly one bar's worth of beats, so a four-beat bar's pattern might be quarter, quarter, half or half, quarter, quarter, among other possibilities. Answering with the correct total but the wrong order, such as half, quarter, quarter when the actual pattern was quarter, quarter, half, is marked incorrect, since this tool tests the sequence, not only the sum.

Method and limitations

Each question uses the same seeded, bounded generator as Rhythm Dictation Trainer, restricted to the selected vocabulary's exact durations; the same seed always reproduces the same question. Playback happens only after your own gesture, and it can be replayed as many times as you like before answering. This tool excludes your answers, generated patterns, and any running score from analytics entirely, and keeps its review local to your own device.

This tool differs from Rhythm Dictation Trainer in what it asks you to produce: dictation asks for a typed-out duration sequence, while this ear trainer can instead present a small set of answer choices to select from, since recognizing a pattern among alternatives and transcribing one from memory are related but distinct listening skills. Both tools share the identical underlying generator and exact-sequence comparison rule, so a fixture verified against one applies equally to the other's core logic.
