Every physical key on a keyboard corresponds to exactly one MIDI note number and one frequency, but the same key can be named with more than one valid note name (C-sharp and D-flat are the same physical key). Without a stated key signature or scale context, this tool falls back to your chosen sharp or flat preference rather than asserting one spelling is the only correct name for that key.
Worked examples
MIDI note 60 always maps to C4, the standard "middle C" reference point used throughout this site. Moving up exactly 12 MIDI numbers always lands on the same letter name one octave higher, confirming the keyboard's own repeating 12-key pattern.
Method and limitations
The MIDI note maps to a pitch class and octave using the standard scientific-pitch convention (middle C = C4 = MIDI 60), then spells that pitch class using your chosen sharp or flat preference when no key context narrows it further. Playback happens only after your own gesture. This tool identifies and locates a single note; it does not teach finger numbering, hand position, or any performance technique, all of which are outside its declared scope.
The 88-key range (MIDI 21 through 108) spans from the lowest A on a standard piano to the highest C, a wider range than almost any other common instrument covers on its own. Every black key inside that range genuinely does carry two valid natural-adjacent names, which is exactly why the sharp/flat preference exists as a first-class input here rather than a hidden default: neither spelling is more correct in the absence of a stated key.
