A displayed accidental preference can be genuinely misleading once a key or scale context exists: choosing "prefer flats" for a note that a declared key spells with a sharp produces a name that contradicts the key's own letter sequence, not just a stylistic choice. This tool never implies that spelling is arbitrary; it shows exactly when preference is overridden by context and why.
Worked example
The pitch class shared by F-sharp and G-flat sounds identical either way. In the key of D major, that pitch class is spelled F-sharp, since D major's own letter sequence (D, E, F, G, A, B, C) requires an F, not a G, at that scale degree.
Method and limitations
When a key context is supplied, the tool spells the pitch class using that key's own diatonic scale degree if one exists at that pitch class; only a pitch class outside the declared key's own scale falls back to a preference-based spelling. Without any key context, the result reflects your chosen preference only, with no claim that one choice is more correct than the other.
