Scales, Modes, and Tonal Centers
"Scale," "mode," and "tonal center" get used interchangeably in casual conversation, but each one answers a different musical question. A scale is an ordered collection of pitch classes. A mode names which degree of a parent collection you are treating as home. A tonal center is what a listener actually hears as home, which depends on how the music resolves, not on the note collection alone.
The collection is not the tonic
C major and A natural minor use exactly the same seven pitch classes: C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. Nothing about that shared collection tells you which one a piece of music is in. What decides it is the tonic, the note the music treats as its point of rest, which is a claim about function and resolution, not a property of the raw note set.
A mode changes by degree, not by collection
Every mode above is rooted on C, so the comparison isolates exactly what changes: which scale degrees carry a flat relative to C Ionian. Mixolydian differs from Ionian by one note (a flatted seventh). Locrian differs by five. That single-note difference matters a lot musically, since the seventh degree is what creates or removes the leading tone's pull back to the tonic.
Same notes, different name: the parent-scale view
C Mixolydian and F major share an identical seven-note collection; C Mixolydian is simply that same collection with C, not F, treated as home. A pitch-class set alone cannot prove a tonal center
Feed a tool only a bag of notes, C, D, E, F, G, A, B, with no order and no melodic context, and it cannot tell you whether the music is in C major, A minor, D Dorian, or any other mode built from that same collection. Hearing a tonic is a trained skill, not an instant fact
Recognizing which note feels like home in an unfamiliar piece of music is a listening skill that improves with deliberate practice, not something a scale diagram alone teaches. No, they are the same seven notes. "Ionian" is the modal name for the major scale when it is being compared to its six sibling modes built on the same collection; "major scale" is the everyday name for the identical pitch collection used on its own.
Not by itself. C major and A natural minor share every note. Only the tonic (the note that sounds like home) and how the music actually resolves distinguish the key someone hears from the raw pitch collection.
They differ by exactly one note: Mixolydian lowers the seventh degree a half step. That single change removes the strong pull back to the tonic that the major scale's leading tone creates, which is why Mixolydian feels more "settled" or modal on a static chord.
