A chord name is a compact claim about five things at once: a root, an interval spelling, a bass note, which tones (if any) are omitted, and the surrounding musical context. A single note set can satisfy more than one of those claims equally well, which is exactly why Chord Identifier sometimes shows you two names instead of one. That is not a bug the tool is hiding; it is the honest answer to a genuinely ambiguous question.

Pitch class is not the same thing as spelling

A pitch class is which key you pressed. A spelling is which letter name and accidental you write for it, and two different spellings can point at the exact same pitch class. C-sharp and D-flat sound identical on a piano tuned in equal temperament, but they are not interchangeable in notation: which one you write signals the note's role in the surrounding key and voice leading, not a preference between sharps and flats in general.

A worked audit: C-E-G versus C-E-flat-G-flat

C, E, and G form an exact match against the major triad rooted on C (a major third and a perfect fifth above the root). C, E-flat, and G-flat form an exact match against the diminished triad rooted on C (a minor third and a diminished fifth above the root).

E-flat and G-flat are the notes that carry the diminished sound in the second set. Respell those two notes as D-sharp and F-sharp and you are pointing at the identical pitch classes, but the spelling would now fight the diminished triad's own logic (built from stacked minor thirds on flat-side letters), which is why a chord-spelling tool has to reason about interval structure, not just raw pitch class.

Chord Identifier treats a stated bass note as evidence for exactly one of the first two rows, never as a reason to change the root or quality it already found from the note set itself. An omission is recorded as missing evidence and ranked below an exact match, not silently assumed present.

Context breaks ties that notes alone cannot

When two chord readings score equally well from the notes alone, the surrounding key, the chord that came before it, and where the melody is heading are what a musician actually uses to pick one name over the other. None of that surrounding context is visible to a tool that only sees a selected note set, which is why Chord Identifier reports a genuine tie as co-primary alternatives rather than guessing at context it was never given.

Why does Chord Identifier sometimes show more than one chord name for the same notes?

Because a pitch-class set can exactly match more than one chord template depending on which note you treat as the root. When two or more readings score equally well, the tool reports them as co-primary alternatives instead of silently picking one and hiding the other.

Is C-sharp always the "correct" spelling instead of D-flat?

No. Both spell the identical pitch class. Context, the surrounding key, the melodic direction, and the interval role the note is playing decide which spelling communicates the underlying music more clearly, not a universal preference for sharps or flats.

Does adding a bass note change the chord name?

It changes bass-sensitive evidence only: whether the bass is a chord member (an inversion) or sits outside the chord (a slash bass). It never changes which root and quality the note set itself supports.
