Progression and Arranging

What are my options for ending here?

Choose a key, whether the ending should land on the tonic or elsewhere, a bar limit, and which cadence families are permitted. This tool enumerates Locked ending templates that fit those constraints; it makes no claim of stylistic authenticity beyond the named rule.

Understand

This tool does not search for cadences already present in a progression you supply, the way Cadence Finder does; it constructs new ending options from a small, Locked template vocabulary, filtered to fit your stated bar count, permitted families, and whether the ending should resolve to the tonic or deliberately not.

Worked examples

For a C-major authentic target with up to four bars available, this tool can generate Dm7 - G7 - C(the ii-V-I template) alongside the shorter G7 - C (the plain V-I template). Restricting the permitted family to plagal only removes both authentic options and returns exactly the F - C template instead, a deterministic and repeatable change.

Method and limitations

Every candidate comes from a small, explicitly Locked set of scale-degree sequences, each tagged with the cadence family it belongs to and whether it ends at the tonic. The tool filters that fixed set to templates whose length fits the stated bar limit, whose family is permitted, and whose ending matches the requested target, then returns them in a deterministic, declared order, truncated to the stated candidate limit. It does not invent new templates, judge stylistic fit, or rank results by anything beyond that fixed declaration order.

A two-bar limit excludes the three-chord ii-V-I template entirely, since it needs three slots to state, but still admits the two-chord V-I and IV-I templates; a candidate limit below the number of matching templates simply truncates the deterministic list rather than selecting a "best" subset. Requesting a non-tonic ending narrows the search to templates such as the half cadence, which stops on the dominant by design rather than resolving back to the tonic at all.
