Understand
A guitar's tuning fixes the open pitch of every string; any fret above that adds one semitone. This tool checks, string by string, which fret numbers within the searched range sound a pitch class the declared chord actually contains, then reports the lowest such fret per string as its default position. No ergonomic or "easiest fingering" ranking is claimed; a low-fret result on one string and a higher-fret result on the next may or may not be comfortable to finger together in practice.
Worked examples
A C major chord in standard tuning finds a matching open or low-fret position on every one of the six strings within the first three frets, since C major's three pitch classes (C, E, G) recur often across standard tuning's open strings. The lowest-sounding chosen position becomes the reported bass note; every other chosen position is confirmed as one of the chord's own declared tones, never a duplicate label or a silently mismatched pitch.
Method and limitations
Sounding pitch at any string and fret is the tuning's open pitch plus the fret number, the same formula Fretboard Note Explorer already uses. Every coordinate in range is tested against the chord's declared pitch classes; a string with no matching fret in range is reported muted, and a string with more than one matching fret keeps only its lowest option. Only the tunings in the launched vocabulary are supported, and this tool explains known position families rather than promising an exhaustive constraint solve across every possible fingering.
Widening the searched fret range never removes a position already found at a lower fret; it can only add higher-fret alternatives on strings that already matched, or newly qualify a string that had no match at all within a narrower range. A seven-string or a bass tuning behaves under the identical rule: every string is still checked independently against the same declared chord tones, so a bass voicing of a triad, for instance, will typically leave more strings muted simply because it has fewer strings to work with in the first place.
